How to Request GCMS Notes

Last updated: October 2026

You can get your GCMS notes by making a request under Canada’s access to information and privacy (ATIP) process. We handle that request for you in four stages.

  1. Step 1: Tell us about your application Fill in the request form: your name and date of birth as on your application, your UCI and application number if you have them, what the application was for, and your email address. It takes about five minutes.
  2. Step 2: Review and submit You see your details and the price before you submit. You are not charged when you submit. Within 1 business day we email you the payment instructions.
  3. Step 3: Pay and sign the consent form We email you a consent form. It lets us act for you when we file the request. Sign it and send it back as we explain in the email.
  4. Step 4: We file and you receive your records We file the request with the government within 1 business day of receiving your signed consent form, follow it up, and send you the records when they respond. Questions about progress? Contact us with your reference.

How long it takes

The government must normally respond within 30 days and can extend that period. See processing times for what that means in practice.

How you receive your notes

We send the records to you electronically as soon as we receive them. Your confirmation email explains exactly how.

How to request GCMS notes yourself

You are not required to use us. If you prefer to do it yourself, our free step-by-step guide shows how to use the government’s online request form.
